Overview of the Firm
Partners Capital is a $30B private investment office which provides investment management services to charitable endowments and foundations, pension funds, and family offices. Whilst we have a global reach with offices in London, Paris, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Singapore and Hong Kong, and a team of over 180 employees worldwide, we retain an entrepreneurial and collegiate culture.
We were founded in 2001 to provide our clients with a long-term, multi-asset class, multi-manager investment approach, similar to the one pioneered by David Swensen, Head of Yale University’s Endowment Investment Office. To this end, we invest across the broad asset class spectrum, which includes well-known strategies such as Hedge Funds, Private Equity and Real Estate as well as more esoteric opportunities such as litigation finance, retro reinsurance and life settlements. Whilst we largely invest through funds, we also regularly co-invest alongside our managers.
We have never operated so-called ‘in house funds’, and therefore remain free from the conflicts of interest inherent in the business models of more traditional investment managers and private banks. We are proud of this independence, as well as our track record of outperformance, the sophistication of our clients, and the longevity of our relationships with them. Due to continued growth in our assets under management, we are intending to hire an additional Investment Associates to join our four-person team in our Paris office.
Investment Associate Job Description
Portfolio Management (65%): You will initially be allocated ten to twelve investment portfolios which will cover a range of institutional and family office clients. Examples of our institutional clients include the endowments of INSEAD Business School, Eton College the V&A Museum and The Metropolitan Opera of New York. In Europe, our client portfolios are largely managed on a fully discretionary basis by teams of three to six people. The role of the portfolio management team is to specify, develop and ensure execution of clients’ investment strategies. This involves, among other things, the setting of long-term asset allocation strategy, the selection of approved investment funds to achieve this strategy, the ongoing monitoring, management and continual improvement of the investment line-up, and the production of materials for client meetings to report on investment performance and discuss investment strategy. With support and training, we expect you to grow into a position to be able to attend these meetings and develop relationships with clients.
Business Development (20%): You will assist with business development and support the other members of our Paris office as we strengthen and expand our business in continental Europe. In this respect, your role will be primarily focused on preparing pitch materials, mapping the prospective clients’ universe, carrying out market research and preparing reports which will help guide the team’s business development strategy. In due course you will be expected to take a more proactive role and participate in meetings with prospective clients.
Investment Origination, Execution and Monitoring (15%): You will initially be allocated to one of three asset class teams: 1) Private Markets, 2) Absolute Return and Credit or 3) Global Equities, or a broader area such as socially responsible (ESG) investing. As part of the team you will be responsible for researching and identifying promising investment theses and subsequently conducting due diligence on asset managers which, once approved, would deploy our clients’ capital. Your manager due diligence work will give you exposure and direct access to some of the most seasoned and high-quality asset managers in the world. As such we expect our investment associates to display a significant level of maturity and gravitas. Over time you will be expected to develop one or more specialist areas of expertise, manage relationships with managers in those areas and be able to identify and sponsor new investments through the investment process.
We are looking for an intellectually curious team player with a strong desire to further our reputation for excellence. You will have good problem-solving and interpersonal skills and thrive in a collaborative working environment. You need not have worked within the investment management industry, but you will have worked for one to two years in a professional services role (e.g., within management consulting, investment banking, or accounting) and have a passion for investing. You will have good capabilities in the Office Suite and will have graduated with an excellent track record in an academic subject from a leading university. As we are proponents of lifelong learning, you will be keen to commit to further professional development including the CFA qualification, which we will support. Working fluency in both French and English are required. If you believe you have some (or all) of these attributes and are looking to fulfil your potential in an intellectually engaging career with good long-term progression prospects in a growing firm, we encourage you to apply.
