Dave has 20 years of experience operating investment firms and investing in private equity, venture capital and other private and alternative asset classes. He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Selby Lane Capital, LLC, a provider of capital and expertise to investment and asset management firms to execute strategic growth initiatives and expedite ownership and management transitions.
Dave is the Co-Founder and former CEO and Director of Makena Capital Management, where he established and headed the firm’s private equity and venture capital investments prior to being named CEO. Prior to forming Makena, Dave served as Managing Director of the Stanford Management Company, overseeing Stanford University’s endowment investments in private equity and venture capital. Prior to joining Stanford, Dave ran the private equity and venture capital investment program for The Investment Fund for Foundations. During the 1990s, Dave was an international capital markets lawyer in London and Paris with Linklaters, and practiced law with Bingham McCutchen in San Francisco.
Dave currently serves on the Boards and Investment or Finance Committees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Miller Center for the Presidency and Public Policy and the University of Virginia Law School Foundation. He previously served on the Boards of the University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO), Stanford University Athletics, Kuvare Insurance Holdings and Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton. He is a lecturer at the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce, the University of Virginia School of Law and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Dave received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce (Finance), Juris Doctor, and a Masters in Arts in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He has executive education certificates from the Stanford Graduate School of Business SEP Program (2019) and Harvard Business School and is a Member of the California, New York and DC Bar Associations (non-practicing/inactive status).
