Research Associate, London

London

Job Description / Position Responsibilities

Given our style of investing, we are known as “allocators.” We allocate capital, or invest, into asset managers (e.g., private equity fund), not individual securities like stocks and bonds. We create custom multi-asset class portfolios in the “Endowment Model,” as pioneered by the Yale Endowment. Our portfolios have a heavy allocation to alternative assets, including private equity, venture capital and hedge funds. We believe that this approach carries benefits versus “traditional” stock/bond portfolios (e.g. 70/30).

We have built our business around providing “conflict free” investment recommendations, as we do not offer any of our own retail investment products. We are entirely agnostic to the investments that we recommend to our clients and thus have earned their trust as a well-regarded investment partners.

The Research Associate opportunity is a newly created role as part of True North Institute, an exciting new venture for Partners Capital. True North Institute is an investment research institute owned wholly by Partners Capital and focuses on producing long-horizon seminal pieces of research. True North Institute (“TNI”) is headed by Stan Miranda, Founding Partner and Chairman of Partners Capital, and is an independent in-house think tank that studies long-term economic developments with a global impact within and beyond the Financial Services industry. The Research Associate will work closely with a small, dedicated team, and focus on Energy Transition research in the near term, with a longer term focus moving to the application of AI within investing.

The research activity will generally involve web-based searches of the best existing third-party research, reading that research and distilling it down into logical analysis answering precise strategic questions about the energy transition. We often add our own analysis of industry data bases of capital projects, cost analysis or technology readiness analysis. Research will span renewable electricity, electric vehicles, clean hydrogen, nuclear, carbon capture, carbon markets and carbon taxation, as examples.

In addition to the above, you will, for variety, take on other activities and projects as required given the “start-up” stage of TNI’s development. These might include supporting our website development, building and managing our client relationship management system, newsletter writing, updating aging whitepapers, etc.

Attributes / Required Skills

We are looking for intellectually curious team players with strong analytical capabilities and a data-driven model for solving problems. You will be in the early stages of your career with approximately, or equivalent to, two to three years of work experience, ideally from a research focused role across Investment Banking, Professional Services or Management Consulting.

You will have good problem-solving and interpersonal skills and thrive in a collaborative working environment. You need not have worked within the investment management industry, but you will have worked in a professional services role (e.g., within management consulting, investment banking, or accounting) and have a passion for investing.

As we are proponents of lifelong learning, you will be keen to commit to further professional development including the CFA qualification, which we will support. If you believe you have some (or all) of these attributes and are looking to fulfil your potential in an intellectually engaging career with good long-term progression prospects in a growing firm, we encourage you to apply.
